The topic of Cabras’ and Molinari’s movie is the personal research of the holy in human being. What were the existential and overall questions that many of us, between puberty and adolescence, started asking teachers, ministers and parents? The documentary can be seen as if you were reading a peculiar agnostic catechism notebook, and its hinge is the cultural, religious and geographic heterogeneity of the sample we approached.

Like in a tragicomic comedy, a wide representation of human nature flows and passes through the issues raised by the questions, a research that touches everybody: believers, atheists, distracted. “The Big Question” was filmed in Lucania and Rome.

“The Big Question” has been a work with a complicated productive history.

It was basically filmed on the set of “The Passion”, the directors present their idea to Mel Gibson that enthusiastically offers to be the producer and future distributer. In 2004, at the end of the editing, Gibson shuts down the documentary, stops the movie viewing because of specific theological discrepancies in the work contents. After one year he finally decides to release it without cuts, in respect of the work that he had very much liked, however, in artistic terms.

After the triumph at the American Film Institute Festival in Los Angeles, “Variety” dedicates to “The Big Question” three pages and the movie earns the distribution in American movie theatres and the selection in thirty international film festivals. It is still unreleased in Italy. It comes out in DVD on Rarovideo Minerva in 2006.
